Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey of Survey of Visitors to UK Archives, which we ran at Shropshire Archives between 17 October and 4 November 2018. We had almost 100 responses which provides a good sample of feedback on the service. Overall feedback, especially on staff, was very positive.
We send off the surveys for collating and producing bench-marking reports for Archives in the UK, but wanted to provide some feedback on the most frequently occurring issues here:
It’s hard to contact the archive by phone.
Calls are taken by Shropshire Council’s customer service centre and getting through at busy times can take a while.
Often all archives staff are busy providing the face to face service so there isn’t anyone available to answer phone calls. Emails are regularly checked by staff throughout the day so this is the best way to get in contact. We recognise that sometimes a conversation is desirable and we will try and call back if possible, but if we are busy it might take some time before we can get back to you.
Opening hours – especially weekends
Our opening hours are the best we feel we can offer within the budget we have. We have more staffing in the mornings when we can get out items from our stores and encourage advance ordering so that you can make the most of your visit.
In the past, Saturdays weren’t very well attended in comparison with other days. We do feel that some ‘out of hours’ opening is good, so we open one Saturday each month with slightly reduced staffing. Please do come and use us on a Saturday – it’s often a good time to get on with your work, as long as you order any original items in advance.
We want this as much as you do! Shropshire Council is planning to put WiFi into Shropshire Archives at the same time as updating the WiFi in Shrewsbury Library. There are certain building technicalities to overcome. We welcome feedback on this issue by email or as comments.
Our computers do have access to the Internet and we advise booking these in advance either for am or pm sessions. At least one of the PCs in the search room is kept free for accessing the catalogues.
We do try and keep our local studies reference library up to date with publications relating to Shropshire.
The majority of our books are kept in the store room, but all of our books are listed on our online catalogue. To restrict a search just to books, add XLS* to the search box. At the moment books, can’t be ordered on the online catalogue, so you’ll need to fill in book request form or email details. We are working to resolve this.
If you have suggestions for books to add to our collections or if there are books your regularly consult and would like kept it the search room or reading room, please let us know.
