Remember: York Place celebrations

We’ve found this wonderful picture of celebrations following the end of the Second World War. It’s taken in the Summer so possibly later celebrations for VE (Victory in Europe) day or even VJ (Victory over Japan) day.

It’s fascinating as it’s one of the few photographs of the local post war celebrations that the Archives holds. It also portrays an area that no longer exists.

We think York Place was off Beacalls Lane, between Severn Street and Water Street in Castlefields, Shrewsbury. This is now flats. Local historian, Peggy Gibbons, has written that the flats were built in 1962.

We wonder if this photographs evokes any memories of the area or even the celebrations themselves?
