- Admin History Stanley Leighton had started a career as a London barrister when he came into possession of the Sweeney estate and established a bond with the Oswestry district and its ruling elite, not least by marrying a member of the Williams-Wynn family. He served as Member of Parliament for North Shropshire 1878-1885 and for the Oswestry Division 1885-1901. He was an avid draughtsman and over a period of nearly 50 years produced sketches of buildings and views, mainly at locations in Shropshire and neighbouring districts, but also taking in sights as far apart as Aberdeenshire and Madeira. A selection of the Shropshire sketches were assembled for publication when he died unexpectedly, in 1901. The book was completed by Jessie, his wife, and published under the title 'Some Shropshire Houses, Past and Present'. Another five volumes of Shropshire titles had been in preparation: the sketches intended for inclusion are preserved in these bound volumes, with many others.
A collection is arranged in order to show context. This means that it will have been catalogued to preserve its original order where possible. The catalogue will be arranged into sub-sections such as series, files and items so that related records appear together. Your current record is highlighted in bold and the folder it is in shows its context. From here you can explore the collection further by opening up folders (select the + signs) and viewing details of any other records shown (select the text).
