Shropshire Family History Society

Shropshire Archives works closely with the Shropshire Family History Society.

Help desk

Volunteers from Shropshire Family History Society run a help-desk at Shropshire Archives from 10am-1pm Wednesday to Friday and the first Saturday in each month.

Perhaps you are starting out with family history, have hit a brick wall in your research or want help navigating genealogical websites. Whatever your family history query, pop along and speak to the volunteers who provide friendly and helpful advice.

Support for research into poor law records

Records of poor relief are a wonderful source for family historians – whether your ancestor was themselves a pauper or whether they were paying rates to support the relief of others in the parish.

Shropshire Family History Society recently funded an Archives intern post based at Shropshire Archives.  As part of this funding, Meriel Lees catalogued and indexed poor relief records, gave talks and training and wrote an article for the Family History Society Journal.  She also produced some really interesting blog posts with tips for finding and using poor relief records.

You can read more from Meriel’s blog posts here.
